City planners give Speirs Locks Student Campus the go-ahead

Glasgow City Council has granted planning permission for the first phase of Speirs Locks Student Campus, with work expected to start on-site as early as January 2014.

The news comes just weeks after the design proposal for the ground-breaking new campus, created by multi-award winning architects Stallan-Brand, was voted best ‘Placemaking and Master Planning’ at the Scottish Design Awards 2013.

The initial 100,000 sq ft of the campus development is the first new build project to be delivered as part of Glasgow City Council’s wider regeneration of the area. Phase one will provide 235 private student rooms – a mix of single, shared and family accommodation to meet the diverse needs of today’s student population – alongside amenities such as exhibition and studio/workspace, a canal-side café/bar and on-site pastoral care.

Proposals for the second phase will be submitted for planning during the phase one build and when approved, will add a further 336 student rooms by September 2016.

Developers Speirs Locks Developments said: “Our design aims to enhance both the student experience itself and the surrounding area as a whole, bringing new life, energy and interest to what is the now an established arts quarter for Glasgow. We can’t wait to get started.”
